Submerged stone sculptures are vulnerable to biological colonization, which can lead to irreversible damage over time. To combat this, several effective methods have been developed. Mechanical cleaning, such as gentle brushing or low-pressure water jets, removes algae and biofilm without harming the stone. Chemical treatments, like biocides, can inhibit microbial growth but must be carefully selected to avoid environmental harm. Protective coatings, such as silicone-based layers, create a barrier against organisms while allowing the stone to breathe. Additionally, environmental controls, like reducing nutrient levels in surrounding water, can limit biofilm formation. For long-term preservation, combining these methods with regular monitoring ensures the sculptures remain intact for future generations.
